This horse property is in a canyon. Hiro is riding Dylan down below. (Almost the center of the photo.) I'm taking the photo up the hill towards the barn. Horses live in corrals under the oak trees at various levels. Natasha and Summer are at the upper end and no horse is in the barn.

Deusi is age two and is mistaken for an Arabian. Her sire is Ikoon, son of Libero H, and her dam is Natasha, a Dutch mare with Ramiro as one grandsire. I think it is doubling up on Ramzes that produces this refinement.

Tiffany Beck and Toby cliniced with Kathy Pavlich on Jan. 18 at Shadow Ridge in Highland. It was blowing hard and about 2" of rain fell. They had a good ride. Toby is out of my Ster mare, Mariah. He is her first foal. The sire is the Holsteiner Riverman.

Trisha and Zippy had a terrific first lesson with Jutta Schott.

Jutta Schott was certified as a Reitlehrer FN in Warendorf, Westphalia, Germany in 1981, which authorizes her to train and teach up through the FEI levels. She holds the German Bronze and Silver medals and after teaching a number of years in Germany, moved to Austria where she obtained her Austrian instructor's license and worked for seven years as an assistant head trainer at the barn of Arthur Kottas (Chief Rider of the Spanish Riding School) near Vienna. She presently lives and teaches in Redlands, California, giving clinics not only in California, but also in Montana, Oregon and Nevada.

Trisha reports that she got a walk to canter transition and today she rode a balanced counter canter in both directions, and they are starting leg yielding.... only 53 rides to date under saddle.

Trisha took Zip to a HJ show down the street to school inbetween the classes.

He went around the course 3 times.

We were really impressed with his composure and willingness.

I have a Flip video of the rides, but the show photographer didn't take any photos of them jumping because they were schooling, not competing. Grrrrrr.

Zip has a lot of jump in his pedigree. His mother is a G. Ramiro Z /Abgar xx granddaughter, a line that has produced many top jumpers. His sire has both Inschallah and Zeus in his pedigree, again more show jumpers.

Routinier himself scored very well in jumping:
Routinier completed his stallion test with a score of 113.43, finishing 8 th out of the 40 stallions tested. He received two 10.0s and five 9.0s. 10.0s for “Willingness to Perform” and “Overall Ability to Perform” and 9.0s for “Temperament”, “Character”, “Rideability”, “Canter”, and “Jumping (U/S)”. Although known for his dressage talent, Routinier's jumping scores show his skill and aptitude for jumping as well.

Congratulations to Dior's grandsire, DeNiro.
Each year the Hanoverian Verband chooses one exceptional stallion who has had a profound impact on the breed to be named the stallion of the year. It was very exciting to learn this week that De Niro has been given that honor for 2008. Standing at Klosterhof Medingen, De Niro has been a successful Grand Prix competitor, winning the 2001 German Championships for professional riders and the 2003 German Dressage Derby.

De Niro passes on his excellent rideability, movement, type, and expression to his offspring. He has sired 22 approved sons and 99 States Premium daughters.

I put up a photo of Corli taken on Monday night.

She was still herself, happy to go out walking, even though she spent much of her time laying down in the shavings.

Last night Frank ponied Corli out and she was looking tired and her eye was swollen shut from the hard ground. Today he hand walked her a bit, couldn't pony her, so it was time.

I had Dr. Schilling look at her on Sunday and she recommended going to the equine hospital. On Monday, Dr. Etchart looked at her and recommended colic surgery, but he said if we couldn't afford it, he said Monday was not the right time for euthanasia.

I think we all needed to get used to the idea. And I needed the opinion of two different vets on the severity of the situation.

Corli gave me "a look" on Tuesday that made me wonder if she was saying "enough." She had the most incredible eyes, VERY large and deepset like Coromino's.

Such a beautiful young mare. I'll miss her terribly.

This is Tiffany Beck riding Toby in a show last summer. Toby is the first offspring out of Mariah so he is a half-brother to Zip Code, Abigail and Bonnie Bedelia. Tiffany took a year off to have her own baby so they are showing at 3rd level and determined to go FEI. Go Tiffany and Toby!
